Setup & Sizing Check
To ensure the chain sits perfectly flat without flaring or pulling the V-neck out of shape, drop down 1 or 2 needle sizes from your project's main needle size (e.g., if you knit the body on 4.5mm needles, use 3.75mm or 4.0mm circulars for this trim).
Row-by-Row Pattern
  • Round 1 (The Pickup Round):
Starting at the left shoulder seam, pick up and knit 1 stitch in every bound-off or edge stitch along the back neck. When you reach the sloped sides of the V-neck, pick up at a standard 3-to-4 ratio (pick up 3 stitches for every 4 rows).
    • Critical Step: Ensure you pick up one exact, definitive center stitch at the very bottom point of the "V". Place a stitch marker directly onto this center stitch.
  • Round 2 (The Bind-Off Round):
You will begin binding off immediately.
    1. Knit the first 2 stitches of the round.
    2. Pass the first stitch over the second stitch to bind off.
    3. Continue standard bind-off (K1, pass previous stitch over) until you are exactly 1 stitch before your marked V-neck center stitch.
    4. The V-Point Sharpener: You have 1 stitch on your right needle, and the next 3 stitches on your left needle are: [Stitch before center, Center stitch, Stitch after center]. Work a Central Double Decrease (CDD) to keep the point sharp:
      • Slip 2 stitches together knitwise at the same time (as if to K2tog).
      • Knit the next stitch (the stitch after the center).
      • Pass the 2 slipped stitches over the knit stitch.
      • You now have a single, beautifully oriented stitch on your right needle. Pass your previous bound-off stitch over this new stitch to secure the decrease into the chain sequence.
    5. Resume standard bind-off all the way back to the start of the round. [1, 2, 3]
The Finishing Join
To close the loop invisibly without leaving a step or bump where the first and last stitches meet, use a Knitters' Surgical Join (Duplicate Stitch): [1]
  1. Cut the yarn leaving a 6-inch tail and thread it onto a tapestry needle.
  2. Thread the needle under both legs of the very first bound-off "V" chain stitch of the round.
  3. Bring the needle back down directly through the center of the very last bound-off stitch of the round.
  4. Pull to match the tension of the surrounding chains and weave the tail securely on the inside.
Why This Perfectly Replicates Crochet

By binding off the stitches the exact moment after they are pulled through the garment edge, you prevent any vertical fabric row from building up. The stitches are anatomically forced to tip over onto their sides. The result is a continuous, raised horizontal chain that locks down raw edges and mimics a crochet hook trail, achieved with pure, master-level knitting tension. [1]
